Accoya
Developed by leading research institutes across the globe since 1928, Accoya Timber is a unique softwood. Sourced from sustainable and managed woodland, moisture is ejected from the Timber and replaced with acetyl acid. This process produces a number of benefits over standard Timbers.
- Tests to BS EN 350-1 have shown that Accoya achieves a Class 1 Durability against fungi with an expected service life in applications such as windows and doors of 60 years.
- Significantly less shrinkage and swelling throughout the seasons meaning old issues of Doors sticking etc is eliminated. This also has the knock on effect of improving the paint performance as it is having to expand and contract less due to the increased stability of Accoya.
- 100% non-toxic coated as the acetyl acid is a naturally occurring substance of which Pine has 2%, Oak 4% and Accoya 20%.
- Class 1 rot resistance (the highest possible under the British Standard).
- 40% improvement in thermal efficiency compared to Hardwoods. This is proven as our A rated Timber Window energy rated product (WER) can only be achieved with Accoya.
Sapele
The most common Hardwood used in external Window and Door joinery, Sapele is sourced from West Africa and the Cameroon and is classified as moderately durable. With a medium reddish brown appearance and a marked striped figure, select one of our stained finishes to highlight the attractive grain. Sapele has a range of features as described below.
- With Sapele, there is no requirement for preservation treatment as the species' lack of permeability makes it resistant to treatment.
- The density/hardness is 640 kg/m2 (By contrast European Redwood is 510 kg/m2 and European Oak is 720 kg/m2.).
- Over 50% of our Sapele Purchases are "Verified Progress".
